چکیده

[1] We show that the two-dimensional coherence between topography and Bouguer gravity is anisotropic throughout most of the Canadian Shield, excepted Hudson Bay Basin. We interpret the axis of maximum coherence as the direction where the lithosphere is weakest. In the southeastern Shield and the Appalachians, the azimuthally averaged coherence cannot be fitted by the thin elastic plate model. In the other regions, it yields the effective elastic thickness. The average coherence increases in the direction perpendicular to the main tectonic boundaries, the axis of high electrical conductivity, and the seismic fast axis. This consistency suggests that the same stress field affected the entire lithosphere during the last tectonic event.

Investigation of the strength and trend of seismic anisotropy beneath the Zagros collision zone

The Zagros collision zone is known as an active tectonic zone that represents the tectonic boundary between the Eurasian and Arabian plates. A popular strategy for gaining insight into the upper mantle processes is to examine the splitting of seismic shear waves and interpret them in terms of upper mantle anisotropy and deformation. Core phases SK(K)S from over 278 earthquakes (MW ≥ ...

Seismic velocity structure and depth-dependence of anisotropy in the Red Sea and Arabian shield from surface wave analysis

[1] We investigate the lithospheric and upper mantle shear wave velocity structure and the depth-dependence of anisotropy along the Red Sea and beneath the Arabian Peninsula using receiver function constraints and phase velocities of surface waves traversing two transects of stations from the Saudi Arabian National Digital Seismic Network. Frequency-dependent phase delays of fundamental-mode Lo...

Shear zones in the Proterozoic lithosphere of the Arabian Shield and the nature of the Hales discontinuity

Seismic velocity discontinuities are commonly found within the upper 100 km of the mantle lithosphere, with great variability in their depth, lateral extent, and the polarity of velocity jump. Among the more commonly observed is the ‘80 km’ or Hales discontinuity, identified in a variety of tectonic environments, and sometimes associated with seismic anisotropy. Teleseismic receiver functions f...

A review of Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility analysis of Indian dykes: Implications on magma emplacement

The analysis of Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) is a powerful and rapid technique to examine the preferred orientations of mineral (magnetic) fabrics and can indicate the nature of a magma transport (vertical or lateral). The relationship between magnetic fabric and geometry of a dyke swarm enables us to understand magma emplacement processes. Depending on the mutual relationship of...

The Negative Gravity Field Over the 85øE Ridge

An isopach map made from seismic reflection and refraction data in the Bay of Bengal shows two prominent N-S trending features in the basement topography. One is the northernmost portion of the Ninetyeast Ridge which is totally buried by sediments north of 10øN. The other buried ridge trends roughly N-S for 1400 km at 85øE to the latitude of Sri Lanka and then curves toward the west. It has bas...
